Inspiration behind Muslim Link's Women's Health Series

Inspiration behind Muslim Link's Women's Health Series - In last month's Muslim Link, I wrote a piece about why women should think about seeing a chiropractor. The response to the piece has inspired me to develop a series on women's health.

The idea of writing a series on women's health and health care services available in Ottawa came from my personal observation of the lack of discourse on the subject among the Muslim community, particularly among the first generation and new immigrants.

Our community is filled with students and professionals in the field of health sciences, many of whom are aware of and take advantage of the more mainstream health care services available. However, there is a lack of awareness or discussion of preventative medicine or alternative medicine that may benefit them at a more specialized level than a family physician.

Muslim history has a long tradition of contemplating health and working to improve healthcare services, as is shown in the tradition of Prophetic Medicine and early Muslims' contributions to understanding human anatomy. Through this long tradition, the human body has been treated as a precious gift which was to be studied, understood, and taken care of. This is in line with the Prophet Mohammed's (pbuh) famous tradition, as documented by Bukhari, in which he informed Muslims that our body has a right over us, and in accordance with that right it must be preserved and cared for.

Yet there is an overwhelming lack of discourse on health care among the Muslim community today.  While many of us are willing to go see the family physician when things get really bad, there does not seem to be any long term efforts in our community to educate Muslims about the importance of not only taking advantage of the many options available to us in Canada, but also of thinking critically of what each option offers and seeking knowledge on alternatives when one doesn't work for us.

There is another, more specific reason for my decision to begin this series: I have observed that many Muslim women put off seeking medical advice for pain or discomfort until the situation is far beyond anyone's control. They do this for various reasons: because they are too busy, they put their family as a priority, or other cultural practices and beliefs which keep them from seeking medical attention at the first signs of trouble. So knowledge about prevention and early detection of warning signs is so important. This issue is of course not limited to Muslims ”“ or, indeed women. But as a Muslimah I hope that this series provides my sisters, and all those interested, with a basic awareness of healthcare practices, and starts a discussion within the community on the subject.
